Dominican Republic to Begin Construction of Autopista del Ámbar in August
Vice President Raquel Peña announced that construction of the Autopista del Ámbar will start in August. The highway is designed to link Santiago and Puerto Plata in under 30 minutes, creating a strategic corridor for tourism, commerce, logistics and broader economic development in the northern region of the Dominican Republic.
The project is entering the contract‑signing stage, with the Consorcio Autopista del Ámbar, S.R.L. – comprising Ingeniería Estrella, Rizek Constructora, Magna and Constructora Mar – awarded the design‑build contract. Work will proceed on three fronts: from Santiago toward Puerto Plata, from Puerto Plata toward Santiago, and a central segment.
More than 70 business, academic and municipal organisations from the 14 provinces of the north have signed a manifesto supporting the highway, emphasizing its role in reducing transport costs, stimulating agro‑industry, and generating employment nationwide.
