Dominican Republic volleyball teams eye regional titles and Olympic paths

The Dominican Republic women’s U-23 volleyball team began their NORCECA Pan American Cup campaign in Managua, Nicaragua, with a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. Led by Katielle Alonzo and Alondra Tapia, the team aims to reclaim their historical dominance in the tournament, having won six gold medals in previous editions.

Separately, the senior women’s national team, known as 'Las Reinas del Caribe', is navigating a complex path toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Following a recent setback in the Norceca Continental Championship, the team must rely on the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Volleyball Nations League, as well as FIVB world rankings, to secure qualification.

To support these competitive goals, Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz, president of NORCECA, has called for a significant increase in funding. He stated that the National Women's Selection Project requires an investment of approximately US$10 million annually over the next four years to compete at the highest level against global powers like Italy, the USA, and Brazil.
