Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy propose major utility merger
A proposed merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy, which could create the world’s largest regulated electric utility, is facing scrutiny in Virginia. The Virginia State Corporation Commission began its review of the deal on July 15, with a planned review period extending until January 11, 2027.
Public reaction remains divided. During a listening tour led by Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi, Norfolk residents expressed significant anxiety regarding energy affordability and the potential for increased electricity bills and shut-off notices. Protesters from the Stop NextEra Coalition have also voiced concerns about the financial impact on households.
Conversely, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement suggesting the merger could offer benefits such as job creation, infrastructure expansion, and a strengthened energy supply chain. The Chamber indicated that the proposal warrants thoughtful consideration as it moves through the regulatory process and will host a forum to discuss the merger’s implications for the state’s energy landscape.
