Dominion Energy and NextEra merger faces opposition in Virginia

The proposed $67 billion merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy is facing increasing opposition in Virginia due to concerns over energy transition and consumer costs.

According to a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), the updated merger agreement lacks support for offshore wind energy. This is notable because Dominion had previously planned the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, which is estimated to save consumers $5 billion in fuel costs over ten years. Analysts suggest NextEra’s lack of interest in offshore wind may prioritize shareholder interests over Virginia’s renewable energy goals.

Additionally, Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi has become the first statewide elected official to oppose the deal, citing potential increases in monthly electric bills. Hashmi expressed concern that the merger would create the nation’s largest regulated utility without sufficient safeguards for residents. State Senator Mike Jones also criticized the proposal, suggesting the companies may prioritize serving data centers over residential needs rather than providing meaningful relief to consumers.
