Dominion Energy faces scrutiny over merger and new gas plant

Dominion Energy is facing significant scrutiny regarding two major energy developments in Virginia. First, the company has filed a merger application with the Virginia State Corporation Commission for a proposed $67 billion deal with Florida-based NextEra Energy. If approved, the merger would create the world’s largest regulated utility company, serving approximately 10 million accounts across Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The proposal has drawn concern from lawmakers and consumer advocates regarding potential increases in electric bills. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has announced her intention to formally intervene in the case to advocate for affordable rates and clean energy goals.

Separately, Dominion is facing local opposition in Cumberland County over plans to build the Cumberland Energy Center, a 3-gigawatt gas plant. The company states the facility is necessary to meet rising electricity demands, driven in part by artificial intelligence data centers, and could generate $500 million in local tax revenue. However, opponents and health impact studies commissioned by the Southern Environmental Law Center warn of significant pollution risks, including potential increases in asthma cases and premature deaths in nearby communities.
