Dominion Energy proposes 39 GW expansion amid NextEra takeover bid
Dominion Energy has submitted a 20-year long-term power expansion plan to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), proposing the addition of approximately 39 GW of new generation capacity. The plan aims to address rapidly growing demand through a diversified mix, including over 21 GW of solar energy, 9 GW of natural gas, and 3.5 GW of battery storage.
Simultaneously, NextEra Energy is refining its takeover bid for Dominion Energy. To address concerns regarding electricity affordability and competition, NextEra CEO John Ketchum proposed a package that includes $10 monthly bill credits for customers over four years, $100 million in energy assistance for low-income households, and the creation of 1,000 new jobs.
The proposed merger and the expansion plans face regulatory scrutiny. Evidence hearings regarding the NextEra takeover are scheduled to begin on November 17 before the SCC. While the expansion plan provides a strategic framework for future growth, it is not yet a binding list of finalized projects or secured contracts.
