Dominique de Villepin and Édouard Philippe clash over immigration and youth policy

Former French Prime Ministers Dominique de Villepin and Édouard Philippe have expressed opposing views regarding immigration and public spending priorities. The disagreement follows comments made by Philippe, the leader of the Horizons party, in an interview with Le Point regarding the October 17 violence.

Philippe suggested there was a clear overrepresentation of youth from immigrant backgrounds among those involved in the looting and riots. In response, de Villepin criticized these remarks on social media, accusing Philippe of using “identity-based shortcuts” that risk conflating physical appearance and perceived origins with individual responsibility.

In the same interview, Philippe also addressed domestic policy, arguing that the state has effectively sacrificed the interests of the youth to prioritize seniors. He noted that public spending and social transfers favor older demographics, specifically citing cuts to apprenticeship programs. Philippe expressed concern over the various challenges facing young people, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and demographic shifts, while noting a political polarization driving youth toward the Rassemblement National or La France Insoumise.
