Dominique de Villepin criticizes state-fixed minimum wage in France
Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has criticized the practice of the state setting the minimum wage (SMIC) by decree, describing the current system as “the Middle Ages.” Speaking on BFM, de Villepin argued that modern economic reality requires social partners—employers and unions—to negotiate wage levels through constructive dialogue rather than government mandate.
De Villepin, who is currently seeking the 500 required signatures from elected officials to potentially run in the 2027 presidential election, emphasized that strengthening social dialogue is essential for the country's economic health. He drew parallels between the current wage situation and the recent pension reforms, suggesting that a lack of dialogue has undermined political and social stability.
While de Villepin advocates for a collaborative approach between businesses and employees, the French Minister of Labor, Jean-Pierre Farandou, has continued to hold bilateral meetings with unions and employers to address purchasing power issues.
