Domna Michailidou meets Archbishop Elpidophoros in New York
Greek Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, met with Archbishop Elpidophoros of America in Manhattan during the 81st UN General Assembly High-Level Week. The discussions focused on addressing social challenges that transcend national borders, specifically regarding aging populations, social welfare, and family support.
Key topics included elderly care policies, the integration of persons with disabilities, and support for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The parties agreed to maintain regular exchanges of information and best practices between Greece and the Greek-American community, citing the expertise of institutions such as St. Michael’s Home in Yonkers.
In a broader context, Michailidou emphasized Greece’s long-term strategies to combat demographic decline and housing crises. She highlighted the ‘brain regain’ initiative, aiming to encourage the Greek diaspora to view Greece as a viable destination for education, work, and life. The Minister noted that the National Action Plan for Demographics 2025-2035 includes over 100 actions designed to create the necessary conditions for young people to build families in Greece.
