Domnița Bălașa Church: Historical evolution of a Bucharest landmark

Historical archives and records highlight the architectural evolution of the Domnița Bălașa Church in Bucharest. Originally established between 1743 and 1744 by Domnița Bălașa, the daughter of Constantin Brâncoveanu, the site served as a spiritual and cultural center including a local school.

The current architectural iteration, a neo-Byzantine structure with neo-romantic elements, was constructed between 1881 and 1885 during the reign of King Carol I. Archival photography from Socec & Co captures the church in its late 19th-century form, characterized by distinctive striped masonry, four prominent spires, and a lush garden.
