Don Benito residents protest proposed biomethane plant

Residents of Hernán Cortés, Valdehornillos, and Santa Amalia held protests against a proposed biomethane production plant in the municipality of Don Benito. The mobilization included marches from the three towns to the site where the installation is planned.

The project, promoted by Vegantia SL, is designed to process up to 212,000 tons of agricultural waste annually, including manure, poultry litter, and vegetable remains. The facility aims to produce approximately 71.8 GWh of biomethane per year for injection into the natural gas grid.

Local residents expressed concern due to the facility's proximity to their communities, with the environmental resolution placing the plant within 3.5 kilometers of the affected population centers. Protesters are demanding a halt to the project.
