Don Bosco prison in Pisa experiences riot following TikTok live broadcast
A riot broke out at the Don Bosco prison in Pisa after inmates discovered what they believed to be surveillance devices, such as microphones and cameras, installed in their cells. The unrest was broadcast live on TikTok by a detainee, attracting approximately 15,000 viewers.
Inmates reportedly barricaded themselves in the second judicial section, involving about 50 to 56 people. During the incident, detainees claimed they were struck with batons by prison police, while authorities reported that inmates had spread oil on access paths to hinder officers. Law enforcement, including riot police and negotiators, responded to the scene, and tear gas may have been used to restore order.
The situation was brought under control by early Thursday morning following a period of mediation by the prison police. The aftermath includes at least four arrests and significant damage to the affected area. Regional President Eugenio Giani stated he is monitoring the situation closely.
