Don Chon shelter provides heat refuge in San Luis Río Colorado

The Don Chon migrant shelter in San Luis Río Colorado has expanded its services to serve as a refuge for community members facing extreme summer temperatures, which frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Located in the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood, the facility provides a cool, safe environment for individuals seeking relief from the heat, especially during periods of power outages.

Approximately 50 people have recently utilized the shelter to rest in shaded areas and receive hydration through water and other beverages. While primarily known for assisting migrants, the shelter now supports local residents in need of protection from the climate. Additionally, the facility offers free breakfasts daily from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and accepts community donations of food, water, clothing, and other essential items to maintain its operations.
