Donald Duke pledges to reduce Nigeria petrol prices to N300

Donald Duke, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and former governor of Cross River State, has pledged to reduce petrol prices to approximately N300 per litre if elected in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Duke proposed a strategy to price petroleum products for local consumption based on production costs rather than international market rates. He suggested allocating 600,000 barrels of crude oil daily for domestic use to achieve this target, while selling the remaining surplus at global market prices.

The proposal comes amid ongoing criticism of the 2023 removal of the petrol subsidy under President Bola Tinubu, which has contributed to a significant rise in the cost of living. Current pump prices in major cities like Lagos and Abuja are reported to be around N1,400 per litre, making Duke's target a reduction of nearly 80%.
