Donald Trump’s claim of 250,000 noncitizen voters in US states disputed by experts

President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin asserted that a DHS review found roughly 278,000 noncitizens registered to vote nationwide, including more than 250,000 in California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Election experts said the administration provided no evidence or transparent methodology and warned the figures are likely overstated because they rely on commercial data lacking key identifiers.

A Reuters analysis of federal court records shows only 129 people have been charged under the 1996 “voting by aliens” statute, 86 of them during Trump’s term, and none were accused of a coordinated effort to influence elections. Prosecutors indicated most cases stemmed from voter confusion or administrative errors, contradicting Trump’s claim of a widespread noncitizen voting conspiracy.
