Donald Trump announces $1.5 billion semiconductor investment in North Carolina
President Donald Trump has announced a $1.5 billion Pentagon investment aimed at boosting semiconductor production and establishing a new industrial minerals manufacturing facility in North Carolina. Speaking at a campaign rally in Greenville, Trump stated the initiative is part of a broader strategy to rebuild domestic manufacturing capacity in critical sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
The President linked the expansion of the domestic chip industry to his administration's tariff policies, suggesting that import duties are encouraging foreign companies to manufacture goods within the United States. He noted that major manufacturers are already investing heavily in facilities in Arizona and Texas, forecasting that the U.S. will secure nearly 50 percent of the chip business in the near future.
However, reports indicate complications regarding the proposed minerals plant. While Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick identified the company Sibelco as the entity behind the new facility, a spokesperson for Sibelco stated the company has not confirmed any details and is currently awaiting official communication from the U.S. government before providing further information.
