Donald Trump announces $2.35 billion in direct payments ahead of midterms
President Donald Trump has announced a series of direct financial payments to Americans totaling approximately $2.35 billion ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. One key initiative includes a one-time $90 payment for 20.8 million individuals enrolled in Medicare Part B. While the Medicare program covers roughly 70.6 million people, certain groups are excluded from this specific $90 payment, including low-income citizens whose premiums are already covered, high-income earners paying supplemental premiums, and those enrolled in private Medicare Advantage plans.
Additionally, approximately 950,000 Americans purchasing health insurance through the federal healthcare.gov portal have begun receiving $500 payments. These funds are intended to offset rising insurance costs. Reports indicate that a significant portion of those eligible for the $500 payments reside in states with competitive Senate or gubernatorial races.
Trump has also proposed a potential $5,000 payment to all adult U.S. citizens if Republicans maintain control of Congress. Such a program is estimated to cost approximately $1.2 trillion, or about 16% of the federal budget, and would require Congressional approval.
