Donald Trump announces energy ceasefire in Russia-Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump has announced an ‘energy ceasefire’ in the war between Russia and Ukraine, claiming both parties have agreed to the arrangement. The announcement, made via social media, aims to stop long-range attacks but has met with surprise from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated the deal was ‘news to me.’ Zelenskyy indicated he would accept the ceasefire if Vladimir Putin does the same.

The move follows Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports, a step intended to lower global and domestic fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. This decision has drawn cautious reactions from European Union and UK officials. While avoiding direct criticism of the United States, leaders in the EU and UK have reaffirmed their solidarity with Ukraine. German officials emphasized their continued commitment to sanctions against Russia, while Zelenskyy characterized the deal as a ‘gift’ to Putin.

Experts suggest the agreement to purchase Russian diesel could funnel approximately $4 billion into Russia. This development occurs as Europe continues its transition away from heavy energy dependence on Russia, having significantly reduced its daily fossil fuel imports compared to 2022 levels.
