Donald Trump petitions Supreme Court to revive lawsuit against Hillary Clinton
Donald Trump has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to revive a dismissed civil lawsuit against Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, and several other officials. The 2022 lawsuit alleges that Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and others conspired to undermine Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign by spreading a false narrative regarding his campaign’s alleged ties to Russia.
Lower courts, including a federal district court in Florida and the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, previously dismissed the case, labeling it ‘frivolous’ and lacking legal merit. U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks noted that the claims were inadequate and that the suit appeared to be a political manifesto. As a result of the litigation, Trump and his legal team were ordered to pay nearly $1 million in sanctions.
In his appeal, Trump’s attorneys argue that the dismissal was erroneous and that the Supreme Court must intervene to protect the institution of the presidency. They contend that Trump intentionally delayed filing the civil suit until after his term to ensure that the legal battle would not consume the time and energy required for his official duties. The Supreme Court is expected to decide later this year whether it will hear the case.
