Donald Trump appeals defamation rulings in separate legal cases
Donald Trump is pursuing legal appeals in two distinct defamation cases. In one matter, writer E. Jean Carroll has asked the Supreme Court to reject Trump’s appeal of an $83.3 million defamation verdict. Carroll’s legal team argues that Trump waived presidential immunity by choosing to fight the litigation for years rather than seeking immediate dismissal. The jury originally awarded the sum following statements Trump made in 2019 regarding Carroll’s allegations.
In a separate case, Trump has filed a notice of appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit following the dismissal of a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal. The lawsuit concerned a report regarding an alleged birthday card sent to Jeffrey Epstein. A federal judge previously dismissed the complaint, ruling that Trump failed to prove the publication acted with actual malice.
