Donald Trump backs JD Vance for 2028 Republican succession
Donald Trump has signaled his preference for Vice President JD Vance as his successor for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. In private discussions with donors, Trump has reportedly urged support for Vance, while simultaneously acknowledging that the 22nd Amendment prevents him from seeking a third term.
While Vance currently leads Marco Rubio in several national polls, the gap has narrowed significantly in recent months. In New Hampshire, Vance’s lead over Rubio dropped from 46 points in February to 10 points in July. Rubio, who serves as Secretary of State, has maintained a lower profile regarding his own ambitions, though analysts note his background and Hispanic heritage could be significant assets in certain electorates.
Lara Trump has declined to name a preferred candidate between Vance and Rubio, stating that both men would make an ‘incredible president.’ Meanwhile, Rubio has publicly endorsed Vance, describing him as a close friend and a great nominee should he choose to run.
