Trump blames vandals for National Mall grass damage
President Donald Trump has accused vandals of causing extensive damage to the grass on the National Mall near the World War II Memorial. In a Truth Social post, Trump shared a photograph of the brown, patchy turf, claiming it was the work of vandals rather than the result of the massive crowds and infrastructure used during his July 4 Independence Day celebration.
Reports and photographic evidence from the event show that a large stage, seating areas, and other event infrastructure occupied nearly the entire lawn during the festivities. Subsequent photos taken as workers dismantled these structures revealed damaged grass underneath, suggesting the wear was caused by heavy foot traffic and equipment rather than intentional destruction.
This accusation follows a pattern of the president attributing damage to Washington, D.C. renovation projects to vandalism, often without providing evidence and sometimes contradicting findings from his own administration. For example, Trump recently criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro after her office concluded that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by poor construction and flawed installation rather than sabotage.
