Reflecting Pool vandalism algae arrests Trump renovation

A $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington was completed in early June 2026, applying a dark “American‑flag‑blue” coating to the basin. Within days the water turned green from an algae bloom and the new paint began to peel, prompting treatment with hydrogen peroxide and ozone.

President Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, claiming “terrible vandals” had cut a 250‑foot gash in the pool with a blade, poured “corrosive and destructive chemicals,” and damaged the surrounding grass. He warned that the water would likely need to be drained for repairs and threatened “years in jail” for those responsible.

U.S. Park Police confirmed several arrests, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who said he only touched a loose piece of the peeling coating. Authorities have not provided evidence to substantiate Trump’s sabotage allegations, but investigations continue as the 250th‑anniversary celebrations approach.
