US issues commemorative passports with President Trump's portrait

The U.S. State Department began issuing a limited‑edition commemorative passport on July 6 to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. The interior cover features a black‑and‑white portrait of President Donald Trump, his signature, and text from the Declaration of Independence – the first time a sitting president appears on an American passport.

The passports are available only at the Washington Passport Agency, in the standard 28‑page book, at no extra charge, with an estimated print run of about 40,000. Applicants who do not want the design can avoid it by requesting a passport with extra pages. Supporters drove to Washington to obtain the edition, while others expressed disappointment; one applicant described the illustration as showing an “angry look.”

The rollout has sparked discussion of the president’s broader branding efforts, which also include proposals to place his image on currency and other government documents.
