During a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, President Donald Trump suggested that government employees who leak classified information to the media should be shot. He described leakers as the ‘scum of the earth’ and argued that such punishments were used in the past.

Trump specifically linked these remarks to Operation Midnight Hammer, a U.S. military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025. He claimed that media outlets, specifically naming The New York Times and CNN, leaked the timing of the operation, which forced him to reschedule the bombing campaign by two days.

The administration has already taken steps to combat leaks, including proposing that federal agencies require employees to sign nondisclosure agreements. Additionally, the Pentagon has reportedly subjected approximately 50 members of the Joint Staff to polygraph tests to investigate the unauthorized disclosure of classified information.
