Trump calls for new Ukrainian president amid Russia diesel deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called for the replacement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting that Ukraine needs a new leader capable of negotiating a peace deal with Russia. Trump criticized Zelenskyy’s administration for authorizing strikes on Russian oil refineries, arguing these actions have destabilized global diesel supplies and contributed to high fuel prices.

This political tension follows a Trump-brokered agreement to suspend U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 2027. While Trump claims the deal will lower energy costs for Americans, Zelenskyy has condemned the arrangement as “absolutely terrible,” warning it provides Moscow with increased revenue to fund the war. Zelenskyy has responded by proposing that elections could be held if Russia guarantees a 60-day full ceasefire.

In response to the calls for leadership change, analysts have identified Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s former top general, as a potential political rival to Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, European allies, including Germany, have reaffirmed their support for Zelenskyy’s current leadership, despite the shifting stance from the White House.
