Donald Trump Calls for Salary Cap in Major League Baseball

Former President Donald Trump publicly urged Major League Baseball to adopt a salary cap, saying the league should have implemented one "a long time ago" and questioning why it does not have a cap like other sports. He made the remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One as the MLB collective bargaining agreement approaches its expiration on Dec. 1, and warned that the league could face a lockout as early as 2027 if owners and the Players Association cannot reach a new deal.

Trump sided with team owners, who argue that a spending limit is needed to address competitive imbalances caused by big‑market clubs such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays. The players’ union has long opposed a hard cap, preferring the existing luxury‑tax system. The debate has intensified as negotiations for the next MLB collective bargaining agreement begin.
