Donald Trump calls Marine Le Pen France’s ‘conservative voice’

U.S. President Donald Trump has characterized Marine Le Pen as the ‘conservative voice’ of France amid ongoing civil unrest and riots in the country. While speaking to journalists, Trump noted that although he has not met Le Pen personally, he believes she has been ‘badly treated’ and suggested that legal actions against her resemble the ‘weaponization’ of institutions.

Trump used the situation in France to bolster his anti-immigration rhetoric ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November. He claimed that France is being ‘attacked, looted, and burned by migrants, jihadists, and communists,’ and urged Europe to close its borders to prevent the collapse of the European Union.

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized foreign leaders, including Trump, for making ‘unacceptable and foolish’ comments regarding the domestic unrest. Macron accused certain leaders of using the situation for political campaigning and noted the spread of misinformation, including AI-generated images that falsely depict scenes of violence in France.
