Trump cites India's election system to push SAVE America Act
Donald Trump has renewed his push for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, citing India’s electoral system as a model for stricter voter identification in the United States. Trump noted that India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, had previously questioned how the U.S. could conduct elections without mandatory photo identification.
Trump highlighted that India’s recent general election involved approximately 646 million voters, with less than 1% using postal ballots and all voters required to present valid photo identification. The proposed SAVE America Act would mandate documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, require photo ID at polling stations, and place stricter limitations on mail-in voting.
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor endorsed Trump’s position, calling for Congress to pass the legislation. While the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a version of the bill in February, it has faced opposition in the Senate. The White House has described the act as a measure to ensure only U.S. citizens participate in federal elections and to strengthen election integrity.
