Donald Trump claims Canada will become the 51st U.S. state
During a campaign rally in Arizona, Donald Trump stated that Canada will eventually become the 51st state of the United States, claiming it is “the only way this works.” The remarks were made amidst ongoing trade frictions and bilateral tensions regarding tariffs and economic exchange conditions.
Trump argued that the United States does not need Canada to the same extent that Canada needs the U.S., questioning the economic cost of maintaining the current relationship. He suggested that if Canadian authorities do not accept Washington’s rules, they would face massive tariffs. This rhetoric follows previous comments where Trump compared the potential situation to Greenland and suggested other territories could also be incorporated into the U.S.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously responded to similar sentiments by stating that “Canada is not for sale.” The recent comments have increased uncertainty regarding bilateral relations and have contributed to nationalist sentiments within Canada.
