Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Drained for Repairs Amid Vandalism Claims

The Trump administration spent more than $14 million to refurbish the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, applying a new waterproof coating it described as “American flag blue.” Within days of completion, the water turned green from an algae bloom and sections of the liner began to peel. President Donald Trump blamed “vandals” for the damage, claiming cuts up to 300 yards long, while officials and contractors suggested the problems stem from shoddy workmanship.

The pool was drained twice in 2026—first in April and again in July—to remove debris, repair the lining and address alleged vandalism. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the plan is to “repair the vandalism, fill it back up again.” Contractors involved included Green Water Solutions ($1.7 million) for water‑purification and Atlantic Industrial Coatings ($14.7 million) for the coating. A federal investigation led to charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn and three others for allegedly removing pieces of the liner; all have pleaded not guilty.

An FBI evidence‑gathering team documented the site, and a later rumor that Trump’s motorcade left tire tracks in the drained pool was debunked as miscaptioned debris lines.
