Donald Trump claims lower gas and grocery prices despite rising costs

President Donald Trump has publicly asserted that food is becoming more affordable, highlighting price drops for items such as avocados, cheese, eggs, butter, olive oil, chicken breasts and berries. He also claimed that gasoline prices are "not very high" and will fall once the conflict with Iran ends.

U.S. Department of Agriculture data show that food‑at‑home prices were 2.9% higher in April 2026 than a year earlier, and overall food prices rose 3.2% over the same period. While egg and butter prices fell sharply, other categories—beef, vegetables, sugar and non‑alcoholic beverages—recorded notable increases.

CNN fact‑checker Daniel Dale cited AAA figures indicating the national average gasoline price is $4.16 per gallon, lower than the 2022 peak of $5.02 but higher than the $3.12 level when President Biden left office and higher than on 91% of the days of Biden’s presidency. The price also exceeds the level a year ago ($3.12) and the $2.98 average on the day Trump launched the Iran strike.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Trump’s overall approval at roughly 35%, near a record low, with only 22% approving his handling of the cost of living. Most Americans (59%) expect gasoline prices to rise over the next year as the Iran war continues.
