Donald Trump claims Moon ownership in social media post

U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked debate regarding lunar sovereignty after posting an AI-generated image of the Moon featuring a U.S. flag on Truth Social with the caption, “The Moon is ours”.

While a viral screenshot claiming an official executive declaration of lunar territory was identified as satire, the post has drawn scrutiny due to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. Under Article II of the treaty, developed through the United Nations, outer space and celestial bodies like the Moon are not subject to national appropriation by claims of sovereignty or occupation.

In response to the social media activity, Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor posted on X that “The sun is Ireland’s!”, accompanied by an Irish flag. McGregor’s comment follows recent reports of significant business ties between his venture, MMA Inc., and entities involving Donald Trump Jr.
