Greenland security agreement reached between U.S., Denmark, and Greenland FAST-MOVING
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that grants the United States permanent control over security and other strategic needs in Greenland. Trump described the arrangement as an ‘infinite life agreement’ that will allow Washington to defend both Greenland and the United States indefinitely without incurring costs to U.S. taxpayers.
The pact includes permanent basing and overflight rights, as well as the ability to establish additional military installations as required. A key component of the deal is the restriction of adversaries, specifically mentioning Russia and China, from establishing military bases, deploying troops, or making sensitive investments in the territory without explicit written authorization from Washington.
While Trump emphasized permanent control, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that the agreement must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination. The formal signing is expected to take place next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, after which the agreement must undergo necessary parliamentary procedures in both Copenhagen and Nuuk to enter into force.
