Strait of Hormuz declared ‘new American territory’ by Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked significant diplomatic tension by posting a map on Truth Social that labels the Strait of Hormuz as ‘new American territory.’ The strategic waterway, which facilitates approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments, is currently a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

In response, Iranian officials have rejected the claim. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabad dismissed the assertion as a misconception, stating that a map does not establish legal authority. Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that the maritime route will remain closed to traffic until the U.S. fulfills specific demands, including the lifting of economic blockades, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the removal of oil export sanctions.

Adding to the regional volatility, Trump has also threatened Oman with military action if its involvement in negotiations between Washington and Tehran is perceived to hinder U.S. interests. While Jared Kushner suggested that negotiations were underway, Trump has denied that any active talks are currently planned with Iran.
