Trump signals new US-Venezuela energy ties following Maduro's capture

Following a military operation in early January that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, the United States has established a new diplomatic and economic relationship with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez.

President Donald Trump has characterized the shift as a 'great relationship,' noting that the U.S. is receiving 'tremendous' amounts of Venezuelan oil. Trump justified the economic benefits derived from the situation by stating that 'the spoils belong to the victor.'

This geopolitical shift has significantly impacted energy markets. In Spain, oil imports from Venezuela have reached their highest levels in two decades. During the first eight months of the year, Spain received 2.3 million tons of Venezuelan crude. This surge is driven by an agreement between Repsol and the United States to produce and export Venezuelan crude following the lifting of previous international sanctions.
