Donald Trump confirms U.S. negotiations with Houthi group

President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States is engaged in talks with the Houthi group in Yemen to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement. Trump stated that the group is seeking a deal, noting, “They want to reach an agreement now. And if the agreement is not suitable, I will not consider it.”

These developments follow reports of a meeting held in Muscat, Oman, where U.S. officials reportedly met with Houthi representatives at the American Embassy. The meeting was said to have been facilitated by Omani mediation. According to reports, Houthi officials indicated they do not intend to target U.S. vessels and remain committed to a 2025 ceasefire agreement.

Vice President JD Vance has also acknowledged that direct communications are occurring between Washington and the group. These negotiations take place amid ongoing efforts to protect maritime freedom in the Red Sea and following the U.S. designation of the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization in March 2025.
