Donald Trump confuses Brazil with India in election post

U.S. President Donald Trump mistakenly identified India as the location of recent presidential elections in a post on Truth Social. In the original message, Trump praised the speed of India's electronic voting results, claiming 125 million people voted in the first round and results were released the same day.

In reality, the election occurring on Sunday was the first round of the Brazilian presidential election. According to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE), approximately 125 million of the 158.7 million eligible Brazilian voters participated. The most recent general election in India took place in June 2024 and involved 642 million voters.

In his post, Trump also criticized the American voting process, suggesting that results in U.S. cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and California take weeks to be 'stolen' or 'calculated.'

In Brazil, the first round of voting did not produce a winner, as no candidate secured more than 50% of the vote. Conservative candidate Flávio Bolsonaro led with 47.03% of the votes, followed by incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with 45.16%. A runoff election is scheduled for October 25.
