Donald Trump considers meeting Kim Jong-un in Asia
Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his upcoming trip to Asia in November. Speaking to reporters in Shenzhen, Trump described the potential meeting as “exciting” and noted it could occur in the context of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 18-19.
This potential engagement follows Trump’s August decision to reduce large-scale joint military exercises between Washington and Seoul, a move perceived as a gesture toward Pyongyang. While Trump has frequently cited an excellent relationship with Kim, formal high-level summits have been stalled since 2019 due to disagreements over North Korea’s denuclearization proposals. Meanwhile, North Korea has recently strengthened its ties with Russia and China.
