Writing on Truth Social and speaking to reporters, Trump questioned James’ credibility, describing her as a “dirty and disgusting cop” and a “third rate, crooked politician.” He urged Governor Hochul to remove James from the case, asserting that her involvement ensures those under investigation will not receive a “fair shake.”

Governor Hochul announced the appointment of James on October 1, stating that the decision was made because the public had lost faith in Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten. Hochul maintained that James was selected to ensure the investigation is conducted thoroughly and without bias.
