Navi Pillay awarded Nobel Peace Prize amid criticism from Donald Trump
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to South African jurist and human rights advocate Navi Pillay. The committee recognized her extensive career in international law, including her work as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the decision, calling the Nobel Committee “corrupt” and labeling the decision-makers “radical ideologues.” Trump claimed that he and the United States deserved the prize, asserting that he has personally resolved eight conflicts and is close to settling two more involving Iran and Ukraine. However, investigations into his claims of past peace settlements, such as those between Cambodia and Thailand, suggest that some agreements were fragile or failed shortly after being brokered.
Observers note that Pillay’s selection highlights a fundamental tension between two approaches to global peace: one based on negotiations between powerful leaders and another rooted in the rule of law and the accountability of those in power for war crimes and genocide.
