Donald Trump has issued sharp criticisms against Spain, warning that the country could become a “ruined country” due to the ongoing migration crisis in the North African enclave of Ceuta. In an interview with GB News, Trump described the mass influx of over 70,000 migrants from Morocco in late July as being “worse than an invasion” and expressed concern that the situation could spread across Europe.

Beyond migration, Trump criticized the Spanish government for its stance on NATO defense spending. He argued that Madrid is not meeting its obligations, contrasting it with the 2025 NATO summit agreement where members pledged to allocate 5 percent of GDP to defense and security by 2035. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has resisted this increase, calling the 5 percent target “unreasonable and counterproductive,” as Spain currently meets the 2 percent requirement.

Simultaneously, Moroccan Minister Nizar Baraka has reaffirmed that Morocco will not retreat from its territorial claims over Ceuta. The crisis in the enclave has also been linked to reports of increased local security tensions, including a rise in sexual assaults.
