Donald Trump defends data center expansion as vital for AI leadership

Donald Trump has characterized data centers as a ‘goose that lays golden eggs,’ framing their expansion as essential for maintaining United States leadership in artificial intelligence. He has argued that opposing these facilities benefits China’s technological supremacy and warned that communities rejecting such investments risk becoming ‘left behind and poor.’

Major technology firms, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Oracle, are projected to invest over $750 billion to expand data center infrastructure by 2026. While these projects promise economic growth and job creation, they face significant local opposition. Residents and local authorities have expressed concerns regarding high electricity and water consumption, as well as the potential for increased utility bills.

As the demand for AI-driven computing grows, the need for constant cooling and massive energy supplies has led to calls for stricter regulations and moratoria in several jurisdictions. Currently, the U.S. operates approximately 4,000 data centers, with at least 75 more projected.
