Donald Trump defends ICE after shooting of Dominican man in New York

A confrontation has emerged between President Donald Trump and New York authorities following a shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx.

During a migration operation on October 8, agents shot 28-year-old Dominican national Oscar Belgal in the neck while he was inside a vehicle. Belgal was accompanied by his five-year-old son, who was uninjured in the incident. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Belgal, who is allegedly linked to the Los Trinitarios gang, attempted to use his car as a weapon to ram agents, prompting the discharge of a firearm.

President Trump defended the agents during a political event in Syracuse, describing them as “heroes” and claiming Belgal is a dangerous individual wanted for gang-related murder. Trump criticized New York politicians for their opposition to the operation. Conversely, local and state Democratic leaders have condemned the use of force and called for an independent investigation by the New York Attorney General. Protesters in New York City have also demonstrated calling for the abolition of ICE.
