Donald Trump touts tariffs at Michigan GM rally amid rising costs
President Donald Trump visited General Motors’ proving ground in Milford, Michigan, declaring that the auto industry is “back” and that car companies are doing “better than they’ve ever done” because of his tariff policy. He told a cheering crowd that “Michigan is thriving.”
Economic data, however, shows that tariffs have increased household expenses in Michigan by as much as $3,200 in 2025 and have contributed to the loss of roughly 8,300 manufacturing jobs in the state since April 2025. The tariffs have also cost businesses across the United States billions of dollars and have helped fuel inflation. While the Supreme Court has struck down many of Trump’s earlier tariffs, his administration is pursuing new import taxes, including a proposed 50% tariff on many Canadian goods.
During the rally, Trump made a historically inaccurate comment that his father “didn’t want planes,” implying planes did not exist in his father’s era. The remark sparked widespread criticism and was mocked by television host Seth Meyers on a late‑night program.
