Donald Trump demands world's lowest interest rates
Donald Trump has renewed pressure on the Federal Reserve, demanding that the United States maintain the world’s lowest interest rates. Speaking at an event in Ireland, Trump argued that high rates diminish American competitiveness and increase the burden of national debt.
These comments come at a critical time as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) prepares for its September meeting. The demand for lower rates directly conflicts with recent economic data; the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose more than expected, with core CPI increasing 0.3% month-over-month. This inflationary pressure has led market participants to price in an 86% probability of a rate hike by the Fed.
Trump’s remarks have reignited debates regarding the independence of the Federal Reserve. While Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has emphasized that the central bank must operate independently to achieve its mandates of maximum employment and price stability, Trump has characterized the board as “very political.” He has even suggested that the U.S. could halt trade with certain countries if the Fed does not comply with his economic preferences.
