Nidal Hasan execution livestream plan sparks global controversy

The United States government is facing intense international and domestic scrutiny over a plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, a former Army major convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting. Hasan, who is paralyzed from the waist down, is scheduled to be executed by a firing squad on December 3, 2026.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth originally announced the intention to broadcast the execution online. While President Donald Trump has expressed support for the death penalty and stated he will make the final decision regarding the livestream, he has not yet confirmed if the broadcast will proceed. Vice President JD Vance expressed uncertainty regarding the plan, noting he would not personally watch it.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the potential decision, stating he sees no increased security risk and that the punishment should fit the crime. However, critics, including UN Human Rights officials, have warned that livestreaming the event could constitute a violation of the prohibition against torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and various religious leaders have also condemned the plan, describing it as ‘disgusting’ and ‘barbaric’.
