Donald Trump discusses North Korea's nuclear capabilities

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a different stance regarding nuclear capabilities in Iran versus North Korea. While maintaining that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons, Trump indicated a more understanding attitude toward North Korea.

Responding to inquiries in Washington, Trump noted that Kim Jong Un possesses “extensive, quite extensive nuclear capacities.” He suggested that North Korea would be fine as long as he remains in office because Kim “respects and likes” him.

While North Korean officials, including Kim Yo Jong, have acknowledged positive personal feelings toward Trump, Pyongyang has not responded to specific offers for dialogue and has dismissed denuclearization demands as “unrealistic.” Meanwhile, tensions remain high with Iran over its nuclear program and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
