Donald Trump doubts Ukraine license for Patriot missile production
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is “not sure” whether the United States will grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missile interceptors locally, describing the weapon as “very extraordinary” and noting that the U.S. “does not usually grant licenses for equipment.”
Trump added that the decision is being studied carefully and that the United States typically refrains from issuing such licenses. He also said the war’s end, not the missiles, is his priority.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a shortage of Patriot interceptors could become a crisis this winter, saying Kyiv needs roughly 300 interceptors before the season. The potential lack of supplies has heightened concerns in Kyiv.
Special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are scheduled to travel to Ukraine in the coming days to discuss the licensing issue and other assistance.
The only countries currently holding licenses to produce Patriot components locally are Japan and Germany. Defense contractors Raytheon and Lockheed Martin have already sent teams of experts to Ukraine to assess production possibilities.
