President Donald Trump has downplayed reports that Chinese entities provided Iran with satellite imagery of a U.S. military base in Jordan. Speaking to reporters, Trump characterized the situation as mutual espionage, stating, “When they say China is spying on us, I say they are right, and we are spying on them too.”

The reports, originally published by the Wall Street Journal, suggest that Iran received imagery of the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan both before and after an Iranian missile attack in July that killed three American soldiers. While U.S. officials have not named specific Chinese companies or directly implicated the Chinese government, the administration previously sanctioned three Chinese satellite firms in May for allegedly supporting Iranian military operations.

Trump’s comments come ahead of a scheduled visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on September 24. Despite ongoing tensions regarding trade, technology, and security, Trump described Xi as acting “reasonably” and appeared to seek to avoid further escalation before their meeting.
